The
Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library was first
established in Allan's Jewellery Store in 1877. It then became
known as the Mechanic's Institute and for a time was located in the
old Municipal building at the clock tower. It became a free
public library in 1899. the first permanent library was built
in 1923 located at 7 Main Street East through a grant from the
Carnegie Foundation. In 1974, the Library moved to a
storefront and then moved once again to 6240 Main Street in 1977.
On February 17, 1999 The
Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library celebrated its
100th birthday. In 2001, the library moved once more to its
current location in the Lebovic Leisure Centre.
Mission Statement:
The
Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library serves the members of the
public in their leisure, informational, and cultural quests and
provides a community place for the sharing of their creativity,
their joy of reading, and their life-long learning interests.
Vision Statement:
The
Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library is a vibrant community place
with services attuned and responsive to the needs of the community
and with the knowledgeable and friendly staff who work with the
Library Board to enhance the lives of the residents of
Whitchurch-Stouffville.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library offers a variety of programs and activities such as a Summer Reading Program, PA Day activities, OEYC, Storytimes, Family Free-for-all Nights, Crafts, Mark Break Programs, Free Wireless Access as well as York North Community Information and Volunteer Database. The Library also produces a monthly newsletter than can be viewed in PDF format at www.whitchurch-library.on.ca.
