The Town of East
Gwillimbury is located in the
northern part of York Region, 30 minutes
north
of Toronto. It has a well balanced community of a growing
urban area and a rish, fertile rural area covering 238 square
kilometres. The Town consists of a wide variety of urban areas
and villages including Holland Landing, Queensville, Mount Albert,
River Drive Park and Sharon which are seperated by farms forests,
shorelines, country residences and recreational areas. Due to
the richness of urban resources, rural historical and recreational
variety, The Town of East Gwillimbury
is a popular area for businesses, residents and visitor for both
commercial opportunities and year round activities. The Town
is rich with history from early settlement periods dating back to
the late seventeen hundreds along with modern attractions throughout
the town.
In the late 1700's, Governor John Graves Simcoe was looking for the best route north from York (now Toronto) to the British naval posts on Georgian Bay, to aid in this he commissioned the first survey of East Gwillimbury in 1800 and ultimately the Town of East Gwillimbury was incorporated in 1850. Governor Simcoe named the Town in honour of his wife's maiden name "Gilliam".
